Publishing A Book – What Are Your Options?

When it comes to writing your first book, it’s important to stomp out some of your fears and concerns of publishing a book. One thing potential authors worry about is how, where, when, and by whom their book should be published.

There are a few options to publishing a book. You can get it published by a reputable traditional publishing house, publish it yourself, or make an eBook out of it and publish it digitally.

Let’s look at using a reputable publishing house to publish your book. First, it is really difficult to get ‘in’ with a publisher. That’s because they read hundreds of manuscripts before choosing one that they like. Unless you know someone who owns their own publishing company, you probably won’t get your first book published. Besides, publishing a book at a publisher’s house is time consuming and you should work hard to make your book palpable as soon as possible.

Publishing A Book

There are a lot of positive aspects of publishing a book by yourself. One benefit to self-publishing is that you can print off as little as one copy at a time. It is fairly inexpensive. In fact, for a 120 page book that is 5 ½ x 8 ½, you can print off 100 copies with full color covers for around $3.00 each. That’s a great deal! And you can print them off fast too. Many times they will have them printed and delivered within ten days of placing your order.

Another option to self-publishing is POD (Print On Demand). The POD industry is growing very fast and gives you the opportunity of publishing a book one at a time. This helps get rid of the dreaded inventory that sits in your house or office. CreateSpace is an amazing POD company that is owned by Amazon.com. Not only do they print your book but they also create a Amazon.com book page for you to sell your book if you want. Their customer service is top notch and the website is very easy to follow.

Publishing A Book – e-Book

The other option is to get your book digitized. There are so many eReaders out there now that many people who used to buy physical books by the dozens now buy the same amount of digital books (if not more) online. For $150 you can get a company to typeset and organize your book into e-Book format and ‘publish’ it on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other online sites. There has been a lot of news around the popularity of e-books. Take a look at this recent USA Today article – E-books’ popularity is rewriting the sales story – you’ll get just a glimpse of how powerful having an e-Book version of your book can be.

On most websites that offer books for sale, people have the option of buying a physical or digital copy. Because e-Books are cheaper, and more convenient, many authors are getting a larger readership online than they would have gotten offline by publishing a paper copy of the book. We suggest you weigh your options before deciding whether to publish, self-publish, or e-publish your first book.

I’d go for publishing an ebook. I’ve done it myself several times. You can even get your ebook out on Kindle, which isn’t that difficult to do.

If you publish your ebook yourself, the toughest things are setting up a way to collect your payment, I recommend using Clickbank or Paypal, that way you don’t need to set up your own merchant account.

The next hurdle is creating a website and writing a good sales page.

All doable tasks if you research them carefully and commit to getting them done.
